DIS Meet-Up 003 – Green Wood Café

Green Wood Café | 14/09/17

We joined the Secret Severn Art Trail for DIS Meet-Up 003 at the Green Wood Café in Coalbrookdale. This is a lovely, peaceful place, tucked away, in the Ironbridge Gorge. The café itself is peaceful too, with excellent food and drinks and lovely staff.
Take a look at what happens at a DIS meet-up…

As we were at the Green Wood Café, this meet-up’s collaborative drawing was a tree. See it close-up in the video below.

…And here it is in full.

…We all drew our own “terrarium” environment, incorporating various personal things we would want to be surrounded by.

Three “willing” volunteers described pictures of unusual (but real) creatures to the rest of the group and we did our best to translate the descriptions into drawings. Some turned out surprisingly close to the real creatures!

The look of concentration…

Coffee, cake, company and drawing – the perfect recipe for a civilised social evening.

…Drawing in Shropshire is all about “drawing in” and “drawing together”… What better way to do both than with an old favourite! – “Exquisite Corpses” also known as “Consequences”.
If you’re not familiar, the way it works is: One person draws a hat or a head (without showing anyone) and they fold over the paper to the top of the neck, which the next person draws – the activity continues like this, moving in sections down the body, folding the paper and passing it on each time, until a figure is completed and the whole thing is unfolded to reveal a weird and wonderful apparition.

Spot the difference between these two ensemble photos…

As ever, many thanks to all who attended. It’s always a pleasure to see both new and returning faces. Thanks too, Jody-Lea et al at the Green Wood Café for your warm hospitality and enthusiasm in providing this special venue. A final thank you goes to Amanda and the Secret Severn Art Trail for including Drawing in Shropshire as part of the workshops schedule.
Look out for details of our next meet-up and we’ll see you then.

DIS Meet-Up 002 – Quatt Village Hall

Quatt Village Hall | 28/07/17

DIS Meet-Up 002 was held at Quatt Village Hall, a hidden gem of Shropshire, near Brtidgnorth. In spite of the terrific rain, we dedicated drawing lovers, ventured out to take part in games and activities, with a hot drink and delicious cake and scones to keep us going. It was great to meet more new faces, all of whom I hope to see again.
So, here’s what we got up to last Friday…

This meet-up’s collaborative drawing was a space scene. You can see all of the unique spacecraft that we drew, in the video below:

…We found out a little about each other (and ourselves) with our “Swiss army hands”

…We accidentaly created some new species by drawing beetles from just verbal descriptions

Guess the caption from the drawing. How hard could it be? I mean, “a handsome knee”, that’s just obvious! …

…To finish off, we drew some “mirrored mandalas”. Very calming and satisfying.

…Even though most of us were meeting for the first time, I think it’s fair to say that drawing brought drew us together. It was a very enjoyable evening, with a great group of people.

Thank you everyone who came. And thank you Jackie and Steph for all of the effort you went to with providing a brilliant venue at Quatt Village Hall and superb refreshments.

The next venue will be announced soon. If you’d like to come again, we’d love to see you next time and, if you haven’t made it to a meet-up yet, come along because it’s good fun with wonderful company. See you soon!

DIS Meet-Up 001 – EightySix’d

EightySix’d | 08/06/17

DIS Meet-Up 001 took place at the wonderful café, EightySix’d, in Ironbridge. I’m thrilled with how the evening went. It was a pleasure to meet everyone and I hope to see you all at future meet-ups.
If you couldn’t make it this time or you’ve only just heard about DIS, here’s what happened last Thurdsay…

Everyone contributed a hot air balloon to the collaborative drawing. The owl balloon was my favourite…

…There were games – One which involved guessing a word from drawings, another with verbal clues that you could guess only by drawing…

…We drew ourselves as our “spirit animal” – We really began to get to know each other with this one!…

…DIS meet-ups are intended to be social gatherings and we’re off to a great start because this one certainly was…

…As well as games, there were challenges – like “mirroring” your partner as they draw, creating wonderful, symmetrical patterns. Some groups took this much further by also “flipping” the drawing or “reflecting” the pattern four ways…

…Everyone responded to all of the games, exercises and challenges in such a positive way and with real enthusiasm.

Thank you to everyone who attended our inaugural DIS meet-up. The support for Drawing in Shropshire has been astonishing, even from before a date was mentioned, let alone a venue.
So, thank you also Molly and Evelina – EightySix’d proved to be the perfect first location.

And, finally, for everyone who wanted to come and either couldn’t make it or wasn’t able to secure a place this time, fear not! There will be many more meet-ups and the next venue will be announced soon.

Drawing in Shropshire – Social gatherings with a twist:
Chat with friends, meet like-minded people and enjoy a drink or two, whilst experiencing drawing, not as a means of creating an artwork or a design, but purely as a fun recreational activity in its own right.

Come along to take part in silly games, inventive exercises and quirky challenges.
Drawing in Shropshire was begun by local artist Sam Brett-Atkin.
Monthly meet-ups take place in different venues around the county.
Pens, pencils and paper are provided, but it’s recommended that attendees also bring their own.
